Squelch (SQL)
Squelch controls how weak a signal has to be before your radio lets you hear it. Set it to 1 and you'll hear everything — including weak, fuzzy, barely-readable signals. Set it to 5 and your radio only opens up for the strongest, cleanest transmissions. Most users land somewhere in the middle: low enough to catch distant calls, high enough to cut the constant static.
Step (STEP)
Step controls how far the frequency jumps each time you press up or down while scanning. On GMRS, this mostly doesn't matter, since your channels are fixed. It becomes useful when you're using the radio in VFO/frequency mode to scan outside the GMRS band — for example, hunting for local EMS or police frequencies. A smaller step (like 2.5) moves in fine increments; a larger step (like 50) jumps in big chunks.
Transmit Power (TXP)
TXP sets how much power your radio uses when transmitting — it has no effect on what you receive. Most radios offer High, Medium, and Low (some only High/Low). Higher power reaches farther but drains your battery faster; lower power conserves battery but shortens your range.
Battery Save (SAVE)
This setting cycles your radio in and out of a low-power sleep mode between transmissions. A higher number (like 10) saves more battery; a lower number (like 1) barely saves any. The tradeoff: on the highest setting, you can occasionally clip the very first fraction of a second of an incoming transmission while the radio wakes up. Many users just leave this at a middle setting.
Voice-Activated Transmission (VOX)
VOX lets the radio start transmitting automatically when it detects your voice, instead of requiring a push-to-talk button press. The scale runs 1–10: at 10, you need to speak loudly for it to trigger; at 1, even a whisper sets it off. In practice, VOX is best left off — it tends to key up on background noise and clutter the channel for everyone else listening.
Wide/Narrow Band (W/N)
This sets your channel bandwidth. For GMRS, wideband is what you want on your repeater channels — it gives you better range and audio quality. Lower-numbered GMRS channels (roughly channels 1–14, the interstitial/FRS-shared channels) are restricted to narrowband by FCC rule regardless of what you set, but from channel 15 up into the repeater channels, keep it wideband.
Display Backlight Time (ABR)
Simply how long the screen backlight stays lit after you stop pressing buttons — anywhere from about 1 to 10 seconds, or off entirely. Purely a battery/convenience preference with no effect on radio performance.
Dual Watch (TDR)
Dual watch lets your radio monitor two channels at once — say, a repeater channel and a simplex channel. Whichever one receives a transmission is the one that plays through your speaker, and the radio automatically switches to it. Works with any combination: two repeaters, two simplex channels, or one of each.
Button Beep (BEEP)
Turns the confirmation beep on or off when you press a button. Purely a preference setting.
Transmission Timeout Timer (TOT)
TOT caps how long you can transmit continuously — up to about 60 seconds on most radios — before the radio automatically cuts off. This protects the radio from overheating on a stuck transmission, and it's especially useful if the radio is in a chest rig or bag where the PTT button could get bumped and jammed on.
Privacy Tones: CTCSS & DCS
These are your privacy tones — RCTCSS/RDCS (receive) and TCTCSS/TDCS (transmit), analog and digital versions of the same idea. On the receive side, a tone filters out other people's chatter so you only hear transmissions carrying the matching tone. On the transmit side, a tone is what unlocks a repeater — most repeaters require a specific CTCSS or DCS tone before they'll relay your transmission at all. If your transmit tone doesn't match the repeater's requirement, you'll key up, but nothing will actually go out over the repeater.
Voice Prompts (VOICE)
This is the spoken confirmation that plays as you navigate the menu, telling you what setting you just selected. Most radios let you choose between English and Chinese, or turn it off entirely.
Scan Resume Modes (SC-REV)
SEV controls how scanning behaves once it lands on an active channel:
- TO — stops on a transmission, plays it, then resumes scanning after a set time.
- CO — stops on a transmission and resumes scanning once that signal ends.
- SE — stops on a transmission and stays there until you manually restart scanning. This is the most commonly preferred mode, since it won't jump away mid-conversation.
Channel Display Mode (MDF-A/MDF-B)
Controls what shows on each line of the screen for a given channel — the channel's assigned name (if you've named it in CHIRP) or its raw frequency/channel number. MDFA controls the top line, MDFB the bottom line. If you've already named your channels in CHIRP, most people set at least one line to display the name.
Busy Channel Lockout (BCL)
BCL prevents you from transmitting on top of someone who's already using the channel — repeater or simplex, tone or no tone. If the channel is busy, your radio gives a quick warning beep instead of transmitting, so you know to wait a moment before trying again.
Frequency Shift Direction & Offset (SFT-D/OFFSET)
These two settings don't apply to GMRS — GMRS repeaters use a fixed, standardized offset that your radio handles automatically if you are on a repeater channel. SFTD and OFFSET only matter if you're also operating on ham bands, where repeaters can have positive offsets (transmit you to a higher frequency) and negative offsets (transmit you to a lower frequency).
Add/Delete Channel (MEM-CH / DEL-CH)
Two straightforward menu items: MEM-CH adds a new channel with your own settings (frequency, tones, power, etc.), and DEL-CH deletes an existing one.
LED Screen Colors
Three related settings control your screen's color, usually a choice of two or three colors like orange, blue, or purple:
- RX LED — color when receiving a transmission
- TX LED — color when you're transmitting
- WT LED — standby color when idle
Alarm Mode (AL-MOD)
Most radios have a built-in alarm triggered by holding a side button. ALM controls how it behaves:
- ST — plays the alarm tone only through your own radio's speaker.
- Tone — broadcasts an audible alarm tone on the current channel, so others hear something is wrong, without knowing who.
- Code — sends a DTMF code instead of an audible alarm. This can be programmed in CHIRP (some users encode their initials as a number sequence), letting someone with a compatible decoder identify who triggered it.
Dual PTT Priority (TDR-A/B)

- DT-ST — controls what you hear on your own radio: with this on, you hear the tones you manually punch into the keypad, but not your automatic ID tone.
- ANI-ST — the reverse: you hear your automatic ID (ANI) tone, but not manually-dialed digits.
- DT+ANI — you hear both. Turning this off doesn't disable DTMF transmission — it only affects what plays back to your own ear.
- ANI ID — your radio's own DTMF identifier code, sent automatically with your transmissions.
- PTT-ID — controls when your ANI code transmits: at the beginning of a transmission (BOT), the end (EOT), or both — and how much delay before it sends.
- SCODE (signal code) — a separate, per-channel DTMF code you can program in CHIRP, distinct from your radio's ID. Note that if PTT-ID is set to EOT, it can override and cancel out a "before transmission" SCODE — setting PTT-ID to both lets the SCODE fire at key-up and your ID fire at the end without one canceling the other.
