Creating an emergency preparedness plan is one of the most important steps you can take to protect yourself and your family in unexpected situations. Emergencies can happen anytime and anywhere, so having a clear plan can make a huge difference in your ability to stay safe and recover quickly.
How to Create an Emergency Preparedness Plan
- Assess Your Risks: Identify the most likely emergencies for your area. This could include natural disasters, as well as man-made events like power outages or civil unrest. As a prepper, civil unrest is more what we focus on.
- Develop a Communication Plan: Make sure everyone in your household knows how to contact each other during an emergency. Include phone numbers, meeting spots, and a designated out-of-town contact.
- Assemble an Emergency Kit: Gather essential supplies like non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, and a first-aid kit. Plan for at least 72 hours of self-sufficiency.
- Plan for Evacuation: Know your local evacuation routes and have a plan for where you’ll go if you need to leave your home. Keep important documents, medications, and valuables in a grab-and-go bag.
- Prepare for Specific Needs: Consider the needs of pets, young children, elderly family members, or anyone with medical conditions. Customize your plan to ensure everyone is accounted for.
- Stay Informed: Sign up for local alerts and monitor emergency services in your area. A reliable radio or communication device can keep you updated during a crisis.
- Practice Your Plan: Regularly review and rehearse your plan with your family. Practicing helps everyone stay calm and know what to do when an emergency arises.

Hi – I’m John. I live in a suburban area just outside of the DC Metro area with my wife and two small children. I’ve never considered myself a hardcore “prepper,” but as someone who pays attention to political, financial, and international news, I know the importance of being prepared.
During the events of 2020, businesses closed due to Covid regulations, grocery stores went empty, and riots ramped up across the United States. Our national debt spiraled out of control, and excessive spending and money printing have led to severe inflation, supply chain issues, and financial instability. These challenges, coupled with threats like cyberattacks and political unrest, make it clear that emergencies are becoming more frequent and impactful.
Seeing all of this, I took it upon myself to research and prepare for scenarios like extended power outages, civil unrest, and supply shortages. My mission is to share practical, actionable advice for the average modern family to ensure they’re ready for any crisis.
